Devin Mitchell was born in Sugar Grove, Va. Growing up in the rural south has played a key role in his work. Living his formative years in a small Appalachian town wasn’t easy for Mitchell. Constant pressure to fit the “norm” of small town society made him constantly question the world around him.

Mitchell draws daily inspiration from his interactions with locals and self reflections. This body of work satirically examines rural ideologies. "I create my 'characters' to represent people that have been rejected by society. In a sense, these paintings can be considered self portraits." --Devin Mitchell
